Rules for Writing the Morally Gray Character

The morally gray character. The one who is the Eeyore of the story. Yes, that sort of character.

Today, Hannah Ramirez has rules for writing those sort of characters! Rules for Writing the Morally Gray Character by Hannah Ramirez

Five Rules for Being That One Dark-and-Grumpy Character

  1. You MUST wear dark clothing. No matter what. If you’re not wearing black or gray, then you’ll be automatically singled out as cheerful.

  2. Be sarcastic and rude. And grumpy, of course. If you don’t do these things, NO ONE will take you seriously.

  3. ALWAYS be listening to music. Preferably hardcore rock, with a whole lot of screaming. Music is an important part of your being. Embrace it. Turn up the volume way too loudly. After all, you don’t care about your hearing.

  4. Have one friend who’s very upbeat, cheerful, and definitely not grumpy. You have a reason for being friends with that person, preferably a very sad reason.

  5. Have a tragic backstory that explains your reasons for being grumpy. Maybe you’re an orphan? Maybe your parents kicked you out? Maybe your sibling/pet/BFF died? Or maybe a traumatizing experience that made you draw within yourself. Or maybe you were born this way. Who knows? You certainly aren’t going around telling people about it. In fact, you’ll do anything to keep it a secret.

Bonus points if someone forces you to violate some or all of these rules! It’ll happen sometime.

Anyone else strongly reminded of Tam Song from KOTLC? XD

Hannah Ramirez is an aspiring Christian author and will one day get something published. For now, she’s content to draft ideas and write while evilly petting her psychotic cat. She believes that every one of her stories should have a good dose of sarcasm and wild adventures. Hannah lives in the suburbs of Los Angeles with her large family, where she was born and raised. When she’s not writing, she can be found reading, listening to music, or kayaking out on the local lake.

Yes, I am strongly reminded of Tam! Also Eeyore. I’m not deviating from that.
