Today, I (Erin) have a post for you today that is written by the girl I am coauthoring a novel with! This is the first you will have heard of this novel. You will be hearing more of it in the future, as we will, God willing, be self publishing it when we are done with it.
Today, I present you…
Rules for Writing the Handsome Rogue by E. L. Farquhar

How to be the Handsome Rogue
A five-step guide to overwhelming coolness and a passion for money
CWs: overwhelming coolness, stealing, romance, and guns
You need to have a perfect face. And perfect hair. Preferably dark. You are supposed to be dark, mysterious, and (of course) handsome.
You need to have money troubles. Preferably you should be in debt to a powerful crime lord. But anything that causes you to be willing to do anything for money will do. Especially stealing. Or helping the protagonist out with a seemingly hopeless cause because he offered to help you settle your debts.
You need to be an expert shot with most kinds of guns. That way, when you inevitably get caught trying to get rid of your money troubles, you can just fire whatever convenient weapon is at hand and keep going with your life.
You either need to be a lone wolf or have only one close friend you can rely on. Not everyone is willing to work with a guy with money troubles. But if this guy is in money trouble with you, then the stakes change, and you can totally trust him with absolutely anything.
Lastly, you need to be able to fall in love with a girl who is definitely out of your league. She’ll fall in love with you because of your overwhelming coolness (if you follow the other steps) but you need to fall in love with her. Princesses are especially preferred. Especially ones with overprotective fathers or brothers that will beat you up if you come close to the princess. The more out of your league and harder to approach, the better.
Now get out there and don’t die.
E.L. Farquhar spends most of her time pretending to write while actually procrastinating and wishing she was writing. When she’s not procrastinating, she enjoys playing her violin, playing her guitar, playing the family piano, writing, reading, and getting stuck with library fines. When not playing one of the various instruments, she listens to one of her many Spotify playlists, especially her rock list. She fantasizes about sword fighting and the FBI. She has survived two falls that should’ve killed her and believes that guardian angels are real. She lives in South Carolina with her family and their two dogs. You can find more about her at her blog that she uses very infrequently: Arachwean Journal

So, obviously, most main guy characters in popular books fall into this category.
