Rules for Writing the Animal Sidekick

Hello! Here is the promised article, written by yours truly!

Rules for Writing the Animal Sidekick by Erin Hylands

***

5 steps to being the animal side kick

  1. You’re faithful! Nothing can persuade you to abandon your master—but it is possible to tear you away by brute force.

  2. You are a source of amusement. For example, you eat aimlessly. Or you can talk and crack jokes. That sort of thing.

  3. You are often afraid of water. You just don’t like it, and your master has to rescue you at their own peril. But if you’re a sea creature, you need to be rescued from sharks. Basically, you need rescued.

  4. You are often smarter than your master thinks. You find secret passages and things your master overlooks, then your master isn’t as grateful as he/she could be.

  5. You are always cute. Even if in real life you would be considered ugly, over a screen or fictitiously you are cute. No other way around it.

As I wrote this, I literally thought of Hei Hei from Moana, Maximus from Tangled, Flounder from The Little Mermaid, and Olaf from Frozen (even though he’s not an animal;)
