I’m back! Will the Madrigals be able to defend the valley with their magic—and with the help of Miguela and Anita?
So, here is Chapter 7: Battles and Death
***
Casita’s floors bent down and launched the Madrigals through the air, catching them on the first floor, where screams and fighting were going on. The men wore black cloaks and carried swords.
“Where is your leader, the one who started this whole mess?” one barked, raising his sword over an older man’s head, the man who had lost his hair and wore a wig.
“We’ll never tell you,” he whispered, staring firmly at the man. “We will never betray our Alma.”
“Then you will die!” The man began to lower the sword.
As if in slow motion, Isabela raised her hands, and a vine launched from the ground, breaking the man’s grasp so that he dropped the sword.
“What was that?” The man quickly looked around, searching for the source of the magic.
Isabela stepped forward, her hands still raised. “You will not hurt him!” She waved her hands, and the man was wrapped up in vines, his mouth gagged so he couldn’t say a word.
One man might have been stopped, but there were many, many more, just ready to take his place.
All of the Madrigals leaped into action. Dolores listened for where the men were attacking villagers—both in the actual town and in Casita itself. Pepa created storms of wind and rain to drive them away, Isabela tied them up, Luisa punched them, and Antonio and his animals tripped them. Julieta healed those who were injured, while Felix and Augustin carried those injured to her. Abuela and Mirabel helped get the villagers out of Casita and the village and hurried them toward Rainbow River.
It didn’t seem to be enough. Three more of the men—woman, also—seemed to appear every time one person went out of commission.
It was as if there was no hope.
That was when Casita helped join the fight. Bricks started raining down, hitting the men and knocking them out.
All of it was in vain.
“Abuela!” Dolores cried, covering her ears.
Mirabel whirled around. “What’s going on?”
“They found Abuela!” Dolores shook her head. “We need to help her, or the magic is completely doomed!”
Mirabel nodded, suddenly determined. “I’ll find her. Casita, help me out!” Quick as a wink, Casita tossed her into the air, and she soared over to the railing. She grabbed on and began to inch her way over, hanging on high above the fighting. Searching for her grandmother, she spotted her in a corner, standing strong in the shadow of a hulking man.
“Casita!” Mirabel cried. “There!” The railing broke off and stretched across to the column near Abuela, and Mirabel flipped over the rail to the top. She began to run across the bars like it was a bridge. Adrenaline pumped through her veins as she lightly ran across the rungs, never faltering because that was what adrenaline did. “Let me down now!”
Grabbing hold tightly, Mirabel held on while Casita dropped her to the ground by Abuela.
“You will not hurt us. We are the Madrigals, and you have no place here in this valley!” Abuela said, standing strong in the face of her adversary.
The man laughed and lowered his sword.
“No!” Mirabel cried, running forward and trying to grab his arm to keep him from doing what he was doing.
But it was in vain.
She was not strong enough.
The sword pierced Abuela.
Abuela collapsed, bleeding everywhere.
She was dead.
She was gone.
Mirabel had failed.
