Are you all ready for chapter 3? I know I am!
I am introducing a brand-new character in this snippet. This little girl is super sweet, and I hope you like her character!
So, without further ado, I introduce you to Chapter 3: Miguela.
***
As the festivities continued throughout the day, Mirabel slipped outside for a moment’s breath. The sun shone brightly over the valley, and she took a deep breath of air, reveling in the beauty of the day.
“What are you looking at?”
Mirabel glanced down, noticing a little girl with honey blonde in a wheelchair rolling over to her. “Hi! I’m looking at the sky. What’s your nombre?”
“I’m Miguela,” the little girl said, smiling brightly. She couldn’t have been much older than Antonio, who had been five for about a week. Her eyes twinkled cheerfully. “You’re Mirabel, right?”
“That’s me!” Mirabel smiled genuinely—something she hadn’t done before when someone recognized her. After all, people associated her name with her failed gift ceremony ten years before, the day when her life changed forever—in a way that nobody else in her family had ever experienced.
When her door faded from view, it was as if part of her joy faded away as well. Of course, she had always seemed happy—her quirkiness wouldn’t let her behave otherwise. But trying to always measure up had taken a toll on her. But once everyone in her familia had experienced what it was like being without a gift, their perspective of her had changed.
Mirabel was truly happy now.
“I’ve heard of your family,” Miguela said, locking her wheelchair in place. “Is it true they all have magic?”
Mirabel nodded. “Yep! But when the magic broke, their magic came back slightly different.”
“How so?”
“I’ll show you!”
Mirabel turned and took the handles of the wheelchair, but Miguela shook her head. “I can do it. Mama likes me to go by myself so I can learn to be independent. It’s just her and me since my papa died a year ago.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry,” Mirabel’s heart sank, aching for the little girl. So young, yet without a father. Of course, her mama, tío Bruno, and tía Pepa had lost their papá as infants, but it hurt more seeing this little girl without a father than hearing about her family growing up without a father. More personal, somehow.
Mirabel shook her head and pushed open Casita’s doors, where the party was still going full swing. “That’s my tía Pepa,” Mirabel said, pointing to a lanky woman with red hair as wild as the storms she was known for making. “That’s my mamá, Julieta.” Mirabel showed Miguela the woman with dark hair that seemed to be peppered with white but was in actuality streaked with flour. She was standing in the kitchen, preparing arepas con queso—such a delicious treat, and healing, too!
“Hola, Mirabel.” Julieta smoothed her dress and smiled at them. “Who is this?”
“I’m Miguela,” the girl piped up, brushing her hair out of her face. She looked at the arepas curiously. “Those sure do look tasty.”
Julieta chuckled and handed one to Miguela. “Of course, you can have one.” She winked knowingly. “What are you two up to?”
“Oh, nothing much. Just showing my new friend around!” Mirabel tried to lean against the wall, but it bowed inward, and she stumbled. Crossing her arms, she grumbled, “Gee, thanks, Casita.”
The ceiling creaked down as if shrugging.
“Well, I won’t keep you any longer.” Julieta covered her mouth with her flour-covered hand as if hiding a laugh.

I know, I know, you’re all still wondering about that door. Be prepared! You’ll get more answers next time!
Until then!

This is Cari here. Tío and Tía are spelled with an accent, or tilde. Otherwise, they'd be pronounced "Tee-OH" and "tee-AH" instead of "TEE-oh" and "TEE-ah". Just a little correction from a Spanish speaker ;)
Yay, I was super excited for chapter 3!! I really enjoyed reading this. Thank you for sharing it!!
