A Family Read

Hello, friends! It’s Erin here. Charity and I are trying something new—we’re scheduling posts in hopes that we will be more consistent. Thanks for sticking with us for so long!

Today, I have a review for a book by a young author I happen to know personally. It’s called Crystal and Her Lost Sister by Dulcie Highway.

Imagine that you’re a twin. Go on. You do everything together, and you love each other with everything inside of you. Now, imagine that, when you were born, you and your twin were separated, quite by accident. You grew up never knowing you had a sister until one day you discover an old photo. In Crystal and Her Lost Sister by Dulcie Highway, Crystal goes through this turmoil. As a young author, Highway understands the feelings a child would have, especially in regard to her family. She weaves seamlessly together a story about the importance of family and sisterhood.

As the story opens, Crystal is excited to spend time with her mother and father. But when her father doesn’t come home from the grocery store with the expected mushrooms—and without his car or wallet—it is clear something is at stake. They soon locate the car and wallet, but they are unable to find the thieves.

Not long after, Crystal is looking through a family photo album when she finds a long-hidden photo: a picture of a blonde baby and a brunette baby. The blonde baby looks exactly like her, but who is the brunette? After some investigation, Crystal discovers that the baby is her twin sister Brystal, who disappeared nearly twelve years before.

And so, Crystal sets out, determined to find her sister. Following a mysterious map, she seeks to find her sister. What she doesn’t know is that someone kidnapped her sister and left her in the woods in hopes that she would die.

This story, the first book in the Twin Sisters series, is a beautiful story of two sisters who want to be family again. The way Highway shares the innocence and joy of family is refreshing in this world where literature often mocks family. Readers of all ages will adore this book, making it a read for the entire family.
